Deacon and I have been members of Good Sam for about 2 years now. We joined because it offered road service for all of our vehicles (car, motorhome AND motorcycles). While we are long-time motorcycle riders, we are in the realm of 'newbies' to the RV world. We bought our first RV two years ago in anticipation of my finally retiring (Deacon was already retired). Because of the uncertainties of the times, e.g., whether we would enjoy full-time RV'ing, cost of fuel, etc., we decided to buy a small, older model class C and settled on a 1983 Holiday Rambler Alumalite that had fairly low miles and had been refurbished/modernized on the inside. Retirement day arrived December 1, 2007 and on December 5 we were on the road for our first 4 month junket cross country.
In January, when we fired up the motor in anticipation of leaving Morganton, NC, the old girl left a large puddle of gasoline on the ground that continued until we turned off the engine. Deacon tried to find the problem but couldn't. Realizing that spewing gasoline was definitely not a good thing, we called Good Sam ERS for help. Within a matter of minutes, they called us back and told us they would be sending a mobile mechanic within the hour. Since we were in a parking lot, off the highway, we were in no immediate danger.
Shortly thereafter, Mark Anderson, owner/operator of Nightrider RV in Nebo, North Carolina, came to our rescue. Deacon started up the motor, Mark saw the problem and realized it was too big a problem to be handled in the parking lot. Since his shop was within a few miles, we followed him there. He partially dropped the rear fuel tank and found the cause of the leak: a deteriorating fuel return line. When he removed it, we saw that it was split in several places. He had it repaired in fairly short order.
Since he was already under the motorhome (in the FREEZING cold!) we asked him to look into another problem that had also developed recently: a leak near the water heater. That turned out to be a breakdown of the water pump, probably caused by recent freezing weather we'd experienced in our travels (as well as our not knowing the old timer's tricks of how to prevent it). As it was late in the day, and he didn't have a pump in stock, he very graciously allowed us to stay there and even hooked us up to electric and water. The next day, because we needed to get to an ATM, he took us to a bank, picked up the part and within hours had the pump installed and running. He did a lot of work. His pricing was more than fair. His hospitality was exceptional.
This is another example of the outstanding service we have experienced since becoming members of Good Sam. We sincerely thank the Good Sam network and specifically Mr. Anderson of Nightrider RV for his efficient, capable and timely handling of what could have otherwise been a far more serious, expensive problem in the future.
